INSTRUCTOR: Deborah Karwisch

MEDIUM: Clay

Learn the basics of the pottery wheel in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. Work at your own pace with individual attention given to each student. Bring an old towel and Pottery Starter Kit to the first class.

Instruction will include how to prepare clay for throwing on the wheel, reworking clay after unsuccessful attempts (yes, it happens), and trimming a nice foot on the bottom. The importance of “work wet, clean wet” will be emphasized along with general studio courtesy and safety. The cycle of a clay piece from wet to dry will be discussed, when to dry slowly, clay shrinkage and the fragility of bone dry clay pieces. The glazing class will include a handout explaining proper handling of bisque ware, waxing, glazing and cleanup.  Since throwing on the wheel takes repetition and practice, the price includes the first two Saturdays of the session from 9:30 a.m. to Noon to hone your skills.

Limited to 5 seats.

The classes are sequential (no drop-ins).

COST: $335 GVA Member / $385 Non-Member
Clay is sold separately for $35 plus tax, which includes both glazing and firing.
