“Drawing with Light”
Mary Ruth Moore
July 11 - August 22, 2025
St. Simon’s Island, GA, July 1, 2025 — Glynn Visual Arts (GV A) presents the compelling and emotive photography of the late Mary Ruth Moore (1936 - 2023) in the Portman Gallery July 15 - August 22, 2025. The public is invited to an Opening Reception on Thursday, July 17, 4:00 to 7:00pm.
Moore referred to photography as the practice of “drawing with light.” She took a highly technical approach to her art, cataloging equipment, exposures, and composition for each series of photos. Her inspiration and technique came from a range of renaissance master artists such as Johannes Vermeer and Leonardo Da Vinci. One can clearly see their influence emanate from her work. Her daughter, Laura Lee Samford of St. Simons Island, said of her mother, “she was the consummate student, which made her the perfect teacher.”
Samford will represent her mother’s works at an opening reception on Thursday, July 17, from 4 pm to 7 pm at Glynn Visual Arts, 106 Island Drive, St. Simons Island, GA 31522. Some of Moore’s works and digital prints will be for sale. Also present will be Ben Reynolds, a student of Moore who now carries on as Senior Lecturer at the UGA Lamar Dodd School of Art. The reception is free and open to the public.

August 1 - August 30, 2025
The Hofwyl Paint Out is an annual event held in the spring and organized by Friends of Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation – a volunteer non-profit that works to fund and carry out upkeep and improvement projects at the site.
St. Simons Island painter George Netherton is a co-founder of the event and said the artists look forward to this one-day celebration as a fun way to share their love of art and their friendship with Fendig. The public is invited to watch and learn from the painters. Over the years, the event has attracted artists from Atlanta, Savannah, and Jacksonville as well as our own area.
