MONITOR: Raye Tobin
Who is this for? Anyone who has taken ceramics and pottery classes previously and knows how to work with clay. Students should know how to construct, finish and glaze pieces with little to no instruction. Students will work independently and not have guided instruction. A facilitator can help with studio and technical questions but will provide no projects or set plan for class work. Students with little or no experience in clay should not choose this class.
This class has two options.
Option 1: Handbuilding (limit 8 students)
Students will design and construct their own handbuilt projects. If this option is chosen then no wheel work will be done by these students.
Option 2: Wheel (limit 5 students)
Students who choose this option will primarily work on the wheels and create wheel thrown pieces. If this option is chosen students should know how to work on the wheel and understand how to set up and clean up the wheel. They should also know how to trim and finish the work.
If you have taken at least two six-week pottery sessions at GVA and would like to work at your own pace on your own projects, this class is for you. No instructor – just a fun and relaxing atmosphere where you can share tricks of the trade with other experienced potters. A studio “monitor” will be available to answer questions. No outside clay or glazes are permitted. Bring an old towel and your tools to the first class.
COST: $135 GVA Member / $155 Non-Member
Clay is sold separately for $35 plus tax, which includes both glazing and firing. It’s nice to have your own tools, so if you’d like to purchase a small set of tools, may we suggest this clay tool kit.
Prerequisite: At least TWO six-week handbuilding pottery courses.
