Through an introduction of the elements of art the student will develop a basic vocabulary of the visual language by which artists communicate with the world. The elements of art include line, shape, texture, space, form, value and color.  Beginning with line and ending with color the seven week course will explore each of the building blocks of art through a variety of classroom exercises and enrichment assignments.

Biography: Robert Smith taught visual arts for the past 31 years. Before retiring from the classroom in the spring of 2024 he taught classes in drawing, painting, fiber arts, photography, art history and art appreciation at the middle school, high school and technical college levels during his career. Mr. Smith received his undergraduate degree at the University of Georgia and his masters and specialists degrees in art education at Georgia Southern University. When not in the studio painting he likes spending time with his wife and two sons.  His interests beyond art include cooking, fishing and travel.

Shape is a foundational element of art & Shapes in the environment

SESSION 3: FEBRUARY 5 | Texture

Texture in the environment & Texture as the icing on the art cake

In Studio: Implied Textures, Invented Textures, Texture studies from direct observations from nature

Space in the environment & Space in art

In Studio: Positive and Negative Space, Techniques for creating implied space in art, Linear Perspective
