CAPTURING THE LANDSCAPE ON ST. SIMONS ISLAND

AUGUST 24 - 26, 2023

Join us on enthralling St. Simons Island for three days of plein air painting with accomplished artist Kathy Rennell Forbes. Imagine: three days of painting under the guidance of an acclaimed teacher, interrupted only by meals and walks on the beach! The island offers opportunities for painting both historical sites and exceptional landscapes. The workshop is appropriate for watercolor, acrylic, and oil painters with some experience in their medium. Experience painting in early mornings and spectacular sunsets on the island.

Day 1 – Thursday, August 24, 2023

9:00 – 10:00 a.m. – Meet at GVA for opening and short painting demo, with photographs of the painting sites available.

10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. –   Demonstration and painting at the restored early-19th-century slave cabins at Gascoigne Bluff.

1:00 – 4:30 p.m. – Free Time. Painters can have a leisurely lunch and rest, shop, or paint during the heat of the day.  How about a walk on the beach?

4:30 /5:00 –  8:30 p.m. – Meet and travel out for painting at Golden Hour at Village Creek Landing or similar location.

Day 2 – Friday, August 25, 2023

9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. – On-site painting: Fort Frederica or Cannon’s Point.

12:30 – 4:30 p.m. – Free time doing what you want avoiding the heat of the day.

5:00 p.m. – Early dinner in the Village before setting up for painting sunset at the Lighthouse or the St Simons Pier.  Stay as long as you can manage.

Day 3 – Saturday, August 26, 2023

9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. – Painting Driftwood Beach on Jekyll Island.

12:30 p.m. – Lunch together (with separate checks) either at Tortuga Jack’s or elsewhere on Jekyll Island.

3:00 p.m. – Return to GVA classroom to share artwork, along with Q&A with Kathy, and wine and cheese to end the workshop.

*times are all very flexible

Participants are responsible for lodging and meals, as well as painting supplies. Instruction will be in watercolor, students can work in the medium of their choice.

Additional supplies:

Headlamp for painting in dark

1-2 book reading lights to clip onto easel or support board

Cost: $395 Non-Member/ $350 GVA Member
