Basic Drawing and Composition

INSTRUCTOR: Robert Smith

Using the foundations of drawing and principles of good design allow artists of all levels to more clearly express ideas and create cohesive artwork. In each session of this course, instructor Robert Smith will address techniques and tools to advance your drawing and composition skills. Smith uses context examples, a series of still life drawings, and proven skill building exercises to provide a path forward in your creative journey. Take one class or the entire series!

COST: $150 GVA Members / $165 Non-Members or $40 GVA Member Single Session / $46 Non-Member Single Session

MATERIALS

  • Sketchbook (quality paper 9” x 12”) 

  • Drawing pencils 2B or 4B - soft graphite pencils such as Prismacolor’s Ebony

  • Large erasers. A variety of erasers work well as drawing tools.

  • Pencil sharpener

  • Ruler

SESSION 1: | Introduction to Drawing and Composition

Drawing: line and shape are the basics of rendering. Learn technique and process involved in creating lines and shapes. Composition: the use of directional lines and big shapes to establish dynamic and visually engaging artworks.


SESSION 2: | Organizing Two Dimensional Space

Drawing: using space and proportion to represent three-dimensional forms. Composition: design armatures (support structures) create templates for your visual formats.


SESSION 3: | Value

Drawing: work with light and shadow to create the illusion of form. Composition: learn to use contrast to great effect.


 SESSION 4: | The Tools of the Trade

Drawing: Perspective provides solutions for a variety of rendering problems (moving toward a completed piece). Composition: The principles of design and other general guidelines for effective compositions in art.
