CAPTURING THE COASTAL LIGHT with Brenda Pinnick

MOVED TO FALL 2024 - Join the waitlist below.

INSTRUCTOR: Brenda Pinnick

MEDIUM: Acrylic or Oil

This Plein Air painting workshop is centered around capturing the beautiful coastal light in the landscape of St. Simons Island, GA.

Both days, we will begin early in order to capture the beautiful morning light on the island. Brenda will demo her approach to working in plein air and students are able to paint along if they wish, or watch and take notes. Midday we will return to the arts center to break for lunch and then set up inside (In the air conditioning) to continue working on our paintings. Brenda will demonstrate how to hang onto the freshness of a plein air piece while completing the work in the studio.

Note: students have the option of only painting inside during the afternoon session-or- doing both, outside and inside.

Teaching emphasis will be focused on seeing and interpreting shapes defined by light and shadow, seeing and exploiting color temperatures and chroma, using strong design to draw the viewer in and keep them engaged.  In the studio, we will discuss and employ ways to keep the fresh feeling of plein air painting with a concentration on brush work, paint application and intentional design decisions.

Lunch may be ordered for delivery at attendee’s expense or bring your own. Pastries, coffee and juice will be available each morning.

Oils, acrylics and pastels are welcome. Brenda will be using oil paints.

This three day workshop will focus on learning techniques of painting glass, metals and shiny objects in either Oil or Acrylics. Whether you are a beginner or seasoned painter, this workshop offers insight and instruction. The key to any difficult subject is to break it down into its simplest form and learn to keep only the bare essentials necessary to imply an object rather than completely replicate it. Instruction will include how to develop your ability to gauge proportions, explore the effects of light and improve your understanding of perspective. You are welcome to bring your own reference or you may select from the many that will be on hand. The workshop will be taught in oils, but acrylic painters are also encouraged and welcome. Amanda offers group demonstrations, explanations and personal attention to her students.
